The vast majority of our customers are seeking pain relief caused by rheumatism, arthritis and a plethora of other challenges. The Curatron 2000 excels in its ability to relieve pain. One of the things I always find interesting is the Curatron’s ability to help peoples pets. It’s not unusual to here that someone’s dog or perhaps horse (see http://www.therahorse.com) has benefited from a Curatron system.  The skeptics out there cannot say that a horse or dog has been healed or helped because of the placebo effect.

One of the testimonials at our website reads “I am 69 years old and have osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. I have used my Curatron every day for osteoporosis for 6 months. Sometime ago I was reading a letter from a satisfied Curatron customer who had upgraded from an older technology PEMF machine called the Magnetotron. I was amazed to find out that this device may still be in production. There are and have been several machines over the years that require the user to sit inside a coil rather than on a simple flat pad or mattress. These arcane devices are difficult to use and tend to generate weak magnic fields.

The older coil system such as that used by the Magnetotron coil generate localized fields inside the coil itself. Full body coverage without moving the coil is impossible.

Heavier folks find the coils to be difficult to get into and they can make one feel a little clausterophobic. Even MRI systems today are moving to Open MRI to reduce the feeling of being closed in and allow their systems to fit those wider folks who simply just don’t fit in the older MRI tunnels.

The Curatron is also available with high energy pad about 20″ x 28″ that delivers a 300 Gauss (400 Gauss in the PC model) induction level. This is unparalleled performance and is not available with any other system on the market today.

Many years ago I came home late from work and my wife had put a note on the fridge. It read “Welcome Home - Your dinner is in the dog!” It seems that I’ve always known of a woman’s soft spot for the family dog.

Sometimes you need to replace your old Curatron! Yesterday I received a phone call from a woman who purchased her C2000HT back in June of 2007. Her dog Amber Dawn, has been sharing her Curatron 2000HT (Home Therapy) machine for some time now and it’s time to buy a new machine for herself. Her Collie suffers from back pain and she decided to let the dog give the Curatron 2000 a try and the dog’s mobility improved.

This is not the first time we’ve had folks order a second Curatron but it is the first time that I know of that their original machine was passed on to the family dog.

The scaphoid and navicular are two names for the same bone. This small bone is entirely within the wrist joint. (The navicular is now used almost exclusively to describe a bone in the foot).

Who gets this fracture?
In adolescents and young adults, fracture of this bone is the most common fracture around the wrist. Men are ten times more likely to fracture this bone than women. Although the bone is small, it takes a lot to break it. Oddly enough, twice as much force is required to break the scaphoid bone as to break one of the bigger forearm bones. Because of this, most patients who have broken their scaphoid have done it while participating in sports, such as football, basketball, riding a motorcycle or in an automobile accident. Usually the patient falls on the outstretched hand and hyperextends the wrist joint.

I came across a posting at Ben Philipson’s blog about the use of the Curatron and treatment of the Scaphoid bone so I thought I would share it with you.

The letter from a Curatron user said.

 “I am treating a person for a fractured scaphoid bone which would not heal. What is of particular interest in this case is the fact that the patient was a competitive bike rider and he asked his specialist why so many sports people have the same recurring injuries to be told that they do not heal. Now the specialist is surpised at the amount of movement the patient is getting back, but I am not surpised at all! This [Curatron] is a really powerful healing tool!”

Many of the various models Curatron 2000 come with a mattress or therapy pad to deliver the magnetic flux to you, the user. The coils typically are arranged longitudinally in the mattress or pad. Some of our customers become concerned that all of the energy/flux density is in the center of the mattress or pad. Nothing could be farther than the truth.

I decided to check with the experts at the factory and I received this response.

“The magnetic field is spread evenly over the mattress as far as technological possible. The fact that you are only able to ‘feel’ with the test magnet the peaks in the fields closest to the area where the coils are located is because these areas do indeed create the highest power and will result in the highest mechanical vibrations in the test magnet.

Having said this however placing of more coils closer together will result into opposite forces between the magnetic field lines cancelling out the resulting fields or placing coils farther apart will both lead to ‘dead’ magnetic areas. Also different coil diameters will not improve the aforesaid.

The strength of the magnetic field decreases as the square root of the difference while the angle used for the measurement is critical as well.

Please be assured that the energy entering the body when laying on the mattress is optimally spread throughout the body taking also into account the distance of the average body to the mattress, the angle and the highest body mass according to the location. The only exception is into the lower legs and feet somewhat for which we recommend to use the therapy pad.”

Let’s chat a little about how some of the other guys do it!

Some other manufacturers use only one large coil in their full body mat, which is actually a long wire surrounding the mat. No difficult mathematical formulas are needed to show that the electromagnetic field in such a mat is a complete joke: it is impossible to come close to an evenly spread magnetic energy field over the full surface of such a mat!

The electromagnetic field generators for all the Curatron systems (home and professional units) are designed to drive all the coils in the mats all at the same time during the complete therapy session. The coils in the mattress are placed in such a way that the magnetic field is evenly spread out, as far as this is mathematically possible.

One of the contentious areas and perhaps the least understood regarding PEMF Technology has always been the waveform of the pulses generated by the PEMFT machine. The easiest wave forms to create are triangular and sawtooth waves. The generation of sinusoidal waves is always an engineering challenge requiring advanced circuitry and design.

Triangular, Sawtooth and Square waves generate the most electrical noise and do cause the greatest amount of interference on your radio and television sets in the proximity of the PEMF device. We’ll discuss electical noise in another posting soon.

The waveform that transfers the greatest mount of energy to our cells is sinusoidal or the sine wave. We tend to recognize sine waves when we hear them as single pure tones with no raspy noise associated with them. When we hear our speaker system being overdriven, we hear many waveforms that are not sine waves and we begin to hear noise.

Virtually all musical instruments generate mixtures of sine waves as sine waves are the earth’s natural waves. When we hear a violin string or a bass drum we hear a mixture of sine waves. We generally never hear othe wave forms in nature, we do hear them when we have poor audio equipment or amplifiers and speakers being over driven.

Our cells react in a similar fashion, the sine wave is ideal as it provides the smoothest (least noisy) energy transfer. Ben Philipson, the developer of the Curatron knew this as he started the design of the Curatron family of products.

“The simplest way of using any one of the above waves in the picture is to apply either one of them directly as pulsing frequency for the pulsed magnetic field device, which is commonly done in battery powered and other low intensity devices. For example, by using any one of these waves there is no need to apply any other technology other than simply changing the amount of waves applied during each second and this directly corresponds with the pulsing frequency!

This method almost guarantees non-efficient application of PEMFT.

Let us now take a closer look at the differences between the basic wave forms and the way the pulse repetition rate is utilized in order to create the actual pulsing frequency, as basis for the frequency specifications.

Let us start with an example: if we want to open the tap and fill our kettle with water, the time we need to fill the kettle depends directly upon the water pressure and the time we keep the tap open. If we open the tap just a little bit it takes much longer to fill the kettle, right? We are actually looking at two completely different things (time and pressure), which both together account for the final result.

Correctly designed PEMFT devices do exactly the same: during the time the pulse is applied (opening the tap) the magnetic energy is emitted. Depending on the basic waveform used (the water pressure) this results directly in the quantity of the magnetic energy applied and is one of the critical issues for the efficacy of the device.

In short: The amount of times we open the water tap each second is similar to the pulsing frequency, and the water pressure is similar to the amount of energy emitted.

But sorry, we are not there yet. The efficacy of the device not only depends on the amount of energy transferred into the body but also on the waveform applied during the individual pulses. The waveform reflects the ability to absorb the energy inside the body and efficacy of the device is highly dependent on which waveforms are used in combination with the pulsing frequencies.”

At the left side of this picture we see a basic sine wave signal form. Since we want to utilize the signal to the full extent, we “rectify” the negative part of the signal and obtain a so called rectified sine wave signal as can be seen at the right side of the picture.

We now use “packages” of the rectified sine wave signals during each individual pulse. The Curatron technology  “packs” specific quantities of these rectified sine wave signals inside each pulse and exploit this technology to change the energy transferred during each pulse (see the Intensity page). Of course this technology requires extensive knowledge not only in electronics hardware, but also in software, which is of course extensively available at our company.

The ease of using alternate (non-sinusoidal) waves is designed in to our competitor’s systems because it it requires less engineering and the makers can select lower cost components.

Only Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) influence cell behavior by inducing electrical changes around and within the cell

The magnetic field strength of a magnet is related to its size and composition, which determines the depth of penetration of the magnetic fields. There are many therapeutic systems on the market which use permanent magnets made of different materials. These manufacturers often claim field strengths of 4,000 gauss and higher. These values are however not relevant at all, since the measured field strengths of these magnets range from 310 gauss to 2,200 gauss at the surface, at 1-inch distance around 10 Gauss at 3-inch distance absolutely nothing! [1]

To obtain any electrical induction at all, permanent magnets have to be mechanically moved. Static magnetic fields do not cause any electrical induction! [2]

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) influence cell behavior by inducing electrical changes around and within the cell. Improved blood supply increases the oxygen pressure, activating and regenerating cells. Increased calcium transport stimulates the repair of cartilage.

In order to obtain a real therapeutic effect the induced field strength has to be sufficient to penetrate deep inside the body. This condition can only be met if the electromagnetic flux generated at each individual coil is in excess of 100 Gauss (10 milli-Tesla).

Battery operated systems for whole body use are unable to generate these necessary multiple high energy electromagnetic fields simultaneously, at each individual coil, since the battery would be empty in just a very short time.

Several brands of PEMFT devices have fixed programs with fixed pulse widths and frequencies. PEMF therapy devices using only one specific pulsing frequency like 30 Hz for the complete therapy time necessarily cause these manufacturers to suggest therapy sessions once or twice a day for only 8 or 15 minutes. The reason for this ‘advice’ is that the body adapts to a specific pulsing frequency, making longer therapy times ineffective.

We get used to noise! We simply tune is out! When our environment changes, we notice the change. Our bodies tune out repetitive PEMF signals, our bodies notice the changing pulse widths and intensities.

For example, when sitting in a plane we all experience the noise made by the motors of the plane. After a short while we hardly notice this noise anymore. This is due to the ability of our body to ‘adapt’ to the surrounding noise disturbances and thus ‘cancel them out’. The same holds true for electromagnetic fields, pulsing the whole time with the same frequency and intensity, which are a ‘disturbance’ for the body.

The body adapts to the used pulsing frequency and after a couple of minutes the therapy effect starts to decrease. By changing the pulsing frequency every couple of minutes, this adaptation effect is avoided and effective therapy is thus realized for the whole therapy session, independent of the total therapy time, provided that the frequency steps are sufficiently apart for each time step.

This is the reason why each Curatron model has 10 different programs (protocols) available. Each program consists of a different series of pulsed frequencies and intensities, which run automatically in sequence during the total therapy time. Each program is associated with its own therapy time sequence, assuring beneficial therapy efficacy for the chosen program. This results in effective PEMF therapy for the full time of the chosen program.

It’s interesting that when one starts a business as we did in 1998, we really had no idea what success would look like.
